How many times have you heard these phrases? If you ever watch television, chances are the answer is a lot. There is no doubt about the fact that obesity is a major problem in the United States.

More and more people are becoming overweight as a result of making poor nutritional choices and unhealthy lifestyle choices. So what do you get when you have a nation of out of shape people? A wealth of products and hyped up weight loss programs, of course! For obvious reasons, this industry is an extremely profitable one. These companies know their buyers are looking for a quick and easy way out. If taking a pill or following a simple diet plan is all it takes, then who would not want to pay? Talk to any doctor at a natural health clinic and they will tell you this is not safe.

Fad Diets are Not Long-term Solutions

The truth is that these fad diets often consist of unhealthy approaches to losing weight. When your meals consist of grapefruit and water, for instance, your body is going to be severely depleted of vital nutrients and minerals. Will you lose some pounds in the process? Sure, but that is only because your daily caloric intake is going to be way below where it needs to be for proper functioning.

There is nothing wrong with participating in a fad diet, so long as you take steps to ensure your nutrition is not being compromised. These weight loss programs are not designed for long-term use. Many people who do stick to them for longer than a month feel extremely weak, fatigued and a lot of them become ill. If you are serious about losing weight, then it would be wise to think of a fad diet as a stepping stone, rather than as a solution. If any of these diet programs were the Holy Grail each of them claims to be, then why do they number in the thousands?

A Holistic Approach

The only tried and true method to lose weight is regular exercise and healthy eating; and no, that does not mean starving your body every day. Eat 5-6 smaller meals per day rather than heaping portions at breakfast, lunch and dinner. This will activate the digestion process and prevent that feeling of lethargy. Also, make sure to incorporate multiple food groups (and various foods from each) into each meal. It's important to try and minimize your intake of saturated fats and processed foods. Holistic doctors can be an excellent resource for information relating to weight loss routines that are healthy and natural.

Fad diets can serve as a great precursor to a healthy lifestyle change, but they should not be followed longer than a month. Weight loss is something that takes time and commitment.
