SANTA CRUZ >> Meghann Bourassa didn’t have much of an interest in food, until she went on a raw diet and discovered the desserts she could make: cherry cheesecake, superfood mason jars on-the-go, chocolate almond butter ice cream cake and chocolate turtles.

Now a self-employed nutrition and health coach, the Santa Cruz resident is teaching how to make raw desserts on Aug. 16 at the Westside New Leaf.

For the past 18 months, Bourassa said she’s been on a strict diet of almost no cooked food.

“Everything raw,” she said. “Like my sauces, like every little thing you could think of I was totally raw.”

Her raw diet is the latest chapter of Bourassa’s health journey, which started 12 years ago when she became a health coach for the Jenny Craig corporation, which motivated her to lose 60 pounds, she said.

Throughout her life, Bourassa said she has struggled with asthma, skin conditions and allergies.

“I’ve always been really sick my whole life,” said Bourassa.

About three years ago, she tried a plant-based diet for 10 months, but her asthma returned.

“I decided to do some research on how I could heal it naturally and I found out about raw foods,” said Bourassa.

Now, with the raw diet, Bourassa said, “My energy levels are through the roof. I feel so positive and happy all the time. I feel better than I did 10 years ago, no doubt.”

A surfer, skateboarder and yoga teacher, Bourassa said health is not just about food, but also mind, body and soul.

“I like to go to Pogonip. There’s like this really steep hill at Pogonip. I really like to go to Byrne-Milliron forest over in (Corralitos). It’s a huge incline. I’m all about getting inclines. I like to sweat as much as I can,” said Bourassa.

Bourassa said she wants to teach people about the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

“My whole goal with this is to teach people that they do not have to live in sickness and illness. That these things can be improved by your lifestyle and the way you eat,” she said.
