What not to feed your dog – The Mercury News

DEAR JOAN: Recently you responded to someone about cats eating vegetables and that prompted me to ask if you could please give us some information on what dogs should not eat.

I have a little yorkie and he is a real chow hound. We do not feed him people food, but the little sneak will hang out at your feet or under the table if you or guests are eating, and any crumbs that hit the floor are immediately cleaned up.

While that’s very cute, it worries me that he might eat something that would harm him. I know that chocolate is deadly to dogs, but we rarely have chocolate, and we’re very careful not to drop any when it is around. What else might harm him that we should also be very careful with?

DEAR RAY: I feel your pain. When I adopted my Chihuahua, Bailey, his shelter name was Kennedy. But after having him for a while, I thought he should have been called Hoover. He vacuums up every bit of food he can find.

It’s really important that folks don’t give their dogs a steady diet of people food. You want the healthiest dog food that you can find, and resist giving into those adoring, pleading looks.

Here are some foods to avoid:

  • Bones. Everyone thinks it’s natural for a dog to chew on bones, but in most cases, they are harmful to our buddies. Bones can splinter and injure their stomachs and intestines. Fish bones and chicken bones are the worst.
  • Fish. If dogs eat a lot of fish, raw or cooked, they can develop a vitamin B deficiency that can lead to a loss of appetite, seizures and even death.
  • Mushrooms. There’s debate on how dangerous mushrooms are to your dogs. You never want them to eat wild mushrooms or toadstools, but some experts recommend avoiding all mushrooms, including those you safely buy at the store.
  • Onions and garlic. Whether raw or cooked, onions and garlic can mess with your dog’s blood chemistry, destroying red blood cells and causing anemia. Cats are more at risk from these tasty bulbs, but dogs can be harmed, too.
  • Eggs. This is also a food that folks are divided on. There is a risk of salmonella poisoning from raw eggs, but it’s extremely rare. Boiling the egg eliminates the risk, but also reduces the nutritional benefits.
  • Milk. Dairy products in general are hard for dogs to digest and can give them diarrhea.

    Grapes and raisins. Although I’ve heard from people who say their dogs gobble down grapes without issue, in general dogs should not eat grapes or raisins. They contain a toxin that, in some dogs, can cause kidney damage, which can lead to their deaths. The susceptibility crosses all breeds, so it’s best to not take the risk.


  • Macadamia nuts. We love them, but they can cause neurological damage in dogs.
  • Marijuana. You sometimes hear of medical marijuana for dogs, but those products usually are made from hemp. Marijuana can depress the heart rate, cause vomiting and in some cases has led to death.
  • Fat trimmings. Don’t be tempted to give your dog the fat you’ve trimmed from your steaks. It can lead to pancreatitis.
  • Salt. Eaten in large quantities it can cause seizures and death.

In most of these cases, we’re talking about a frequent diet of these foods, not occasional sneaked bites. But still, we should keep these foods away from our pets as best as we can.

Fibromyalgia Cure – How I Cured Fibromyalgia! Nurse’s Secret!

If you’re suffering from painful chronic fibromyalgia let me say right off the bat that I cured myself of fibromyalgia using a diet I designed for myself, several years ago. I no longer suffer from it and many of its related conditions, Not only did I find my own fibromyalgia cure I got rid of it fast too.

Even with my medical background as a nurse I didn’t know much about fibromyalgia when I was diagnosed. The specialist – an arthritis doctor, who diagnosed me, treated it as a mysterious disease and told me that he just didn’t know what causes fibromyalgia and had no cure or treatment for it other than an old, tattered paperback book he handed to me explaining what it was but with no cure or solution.

It’s still true today that the medical experts don’t know what causes it but they have several theories, I won’t go into those, and research continues to look for a cure.

I would try to go for even a 20-minute walk and my calves would literally ache. In the morning I would stand in my kitchen and just ache all over and I could hardly move. The pain would also focus on one particular muscle and just ache deeply like crazy at the worst times or when I was driving long distances. At night I would wake up in pain for two hours in the middle of the night, every night, interfering with my much needed sleep.

I was like a zombie most of the time in the daytime because of the sleep deprivation, general and focused muscle pain and aching. Of course I also had the other signs and symptoms too – associated chronic fatigue, stiffness, an irritable bowel syndrome diagnosis, TMJ, depression, possible celiac disease and migraine-like headaches that can all go along with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia medications, medicines and drugs did nothing to help and provided no pain relief. Nor did exercise. No one had the answers in fibromyalgia support groups and networks either.

I discovered my accidental natural fibromyalgia cure after I was diagnosed with breast cancer and refused all conventional treatment and went on my own vegan, living food or raw food diet. Of course my diet was intense but I was shocked that first month to discover that my fibromyalgia, and all its signs and symptoms, completely disappeared and has never returned!

Since then I spread the word as much as possible that fibromyalgia has to be diet-related. It’s no coincidence that my diet was responsible for curing me and getting rid of fibromyalgia for good. I still today after all these years. and still maintaining a raw food diet, no longer suffer from muscle aches and pains or any other fibromyalgia symptoms. Nor do I suffer from any of the other associated symptoms.

There is no question in my mind that fibromyalgia is related to our diet and the food we eat. The standard American diet is the diet that most fibromyalgia patients eat. I know because that is the answer to the first question I ask people with fibromyalgia. I used to eat it too. But the foods we eat and our diet have to be at the root of the problem.

So what foods cause fibromyalgia to flare up or what diet should you follow for fibromyalgia? A raw food diet or a diet of predominately uncooked plant foods is my answer. Possibly the avoidance of gluten since many celiacs have fibromyalgia. Highly processed cooked foods have little nutrients left. And there are some other foods you should eat or avoid too. Healthy, vegan foods that are not cooked are the best foods for us to eat and those with fibromyalgia symptoms may find this the best fibromyalgia cure and treatment and never suffer from any pain again. Think about it! I’m still in superior health today!

Blend Restaurant, in North Battleford, along with Light of Christ teacher, Rhea Good, hosted the second annual raw food dinner Sept. 30, 2016.

Raw food chef, Chris Kendall, spent the day at John Paul II Collegiate with students demonstrating his recipes, and preparing for the evening meal. The nutritional value of raw food was explained throughout the demonstrations.

The menu for the evening event was Mexican taco salad along with a fruit soup. The meal started with a fruit soup of chunks of pineapple in a thick “broth” made of blended papaya and orange juice. The main course was chili and dehydrated corn chips with a variety of dipping sauces ranging from mild guacamole to super hot tomato sauce.

Kendall taught students recipes that included banana-date smoothies and a no-potato potato salad. A case of over-ripe bananas disappeared quickly once Kendall started to make smoothies for a morning snack. 

The hearty no-potato potato salad was distributed to students and staff from the school store, Pope’s Corner, during the lunch hour. Ingredients for the student recipes were donated by Frazer’s NoFrills. (Recipes for all dishes are listed below.)

The third annual raw food dinner is already scheduled for Oct. 20, 2017 at Blend Restaurant. This year’s event quickly sold out. Please call 306-481-5149 to reserve tickets for next year. 

Chili Con Rawne Con Rawne

6 Roma tomatoes

cauliflower, about 1/6 large head

red pepper 1/2

brown crimini mushrooms

2 zucchini

1/4 cup sun-dried tomatoes

2 medjool dates

2 green onions (not 2 bunches)

cilantro 1/4 bunch as sold in most grocery stores

oregano, 1 tsp. dried flakes

chili powder 1 tsp.

Dice half the tomatoes and place into serving bowl. The other half goes into the blender. Dice the red pepper, mushrooms, zucchini and green onion and add to the bowl. Add the dates, sun-dried tomatoes and chili powder to the blender with the tomatoes and blend until smooth. Rough chop the cauliflower and cilantro and add to the blender mix. Pulse the blender on a low speed to achieve a chunky texture, not a puree. Pour the sauce over the cubed veggies in the bowl and mix well. Let the flavors mingle for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Creamy Potato Salad

8 brown crimini mushrooms

3 zucchini

1/3 head cauliflower

4 green onions

2 avocados

2 tsp. dry mustard

Large dice all mushrooms, 2/3 zucchini and 3/4 cauliflower like chunks of potato for potato salad. If you have a dehydrator, dehydrate the mushrooms and zucchini for about two hours. This step is optional especially if you will be eating the salad right away.

Soak the cauliflower in a hot water bath for 2 minutes, then drain. Mix all the cubes together in the serving bowl. Make the sauce by adding remaining ingredients into the blender with 1 avocado. Pour the pureed sauce over the cubes and stir to coat. Chop the remaining avocado and add in with a light stir.

Restaurant Report: Chemicals stored with food, issues with raw meat – abc27

Washing your hands is good, especially after using the restroom, especially when you’re handling food, but how clean are your hands, really, if you did not use soap?

Caruso’s on Marietta Avenue in Lancaster was out of compliance with 17 violations. An inspection report from the state Department of Agriculture says the person in charge does not have adequate knowledge of food safety. There was no soap at the handwash sink in the employee restroom, there were no barriers to prevent cross-contamination from raw meat, and there were ant-like insects in the facility.

Rockvale Diner on Willowdale Drive in Lancaster was out of compliance with 17 violations. The inspection report says the person in charge is not adequately managing food safety. Deli meats were not date-marked, chili and cream beef were not being held at safe temperatures, and there were small “wing-type insects” in the kitchen.

Boro Bar and Grill on Front Street in Harrisburg was out of compliance with 26 violations. The inspection report says food was not being correctly date-marked, chemicals were stored with food, food handlers were not wearing hair restraints, and several kitchen tools were not clean to sight and touch.

Establishments with no violations include all schools in Susquenita School District, Sizzle-N-Chill in Harrisburg, Sushi Express in Lancaster, and The Popcorn Loft in York.

The Agriculture Department has a full list of Pennsylvania restaurant inspections on its website.

Bishop Eddie Long tells church that God healed him – Atlanta Journal Constitution

Lithonia megachurch pastor Bishop Eddie L. Long told his congregation during a service earlier this month that God had healed him.

“I’ve been on a journey and just recalibrating myself,” Long said in the video, which was posted on YouTube on Oct. 16 by Miz Justice. “And like I said, I had some health issues and God has healed me. The manifestation is coming through and we stand in that.”

Long, the pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, recently disclosed that he was recovering from an undisclosed health challenge. Many had speculated he was ill after he posted a video in August that showed him looking very gaunt.

It’s unclear from the YouTube video whether Long is saying he is healed physically or it’s a spiritual or emotional healing. In the comment section, Miz Justice said the video was taken on Oct. 9 during his anniversary service.

The Christian Post reported Long had been on a monthlong sabbatical.

A New Birth spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment.

Long celebrated his pastoral anniversary this month and also led a three-day summit with speakers from around the world, including New Zealand and the Bahamas.

In the service, Long told members that God woke him up that morning and expressed to him that some in the congregation suffered from chronic pain. “You have to be controlled by painkillers,” he said. He asked those who were to move into the aisle. “There’s a healing balm in here.”

He then asked them to come up to the altar and asked for his oil and began a healing service.

In the August video, a much slimmer Long is shown working out.

“People are asking, ‘Bishop, what happened to all of you?’” he says in the video, posted to his public Facebook page. “Well, all of me has meelllllted away.”

In the video, he told members that eating a mostly raw diet has given him more energy and lowered his blood pressure. He has lost weight and no longer has to take blood pressure medication.

“I’m on the medicine that God gave you to feed your immune system to build you up,” he says in the clip. “You know what, if you really want to move through this world and have influence, you gotta be spiritual and you have to walk by his commandments and you have to be healthy.”

“You Don’t Have to Be An Expert”

What if I told you that you don’t even need credentials to make money in the natural health movement? That’s right. You don’t need a degree. You don’t need any diploma!

In fact, just getting a diploma won’t help you unless you do this one thing, which is the only requirement to making money in the natural health movement:

You need to add value to other people’s lives, and get paid for it.

Chances are that if you’re reading this you know more about health and nutrition than 99.99% of the people out there. That makes you qualified to say something about it. Also, if you’ve done something that other people haven’t done, like having improved your health, then you can teach it to them.

The value you add to other peoples’ lives is really going to be the measure of your success. It’s what you’re going to get paid for.

Opportunities Abound

There are so many opportunities to make money in the natural health movement, it’s mind-boggling. Unfortunately, chances are that you don’t recognize them.

Most people’s initial ideas of how to make money in this field are usually not very good. What you want is something that will bring you maximum cash, for minimum effort, while helping as many people as possible.

You also want to work once, and be paid over and over and over again. So opening a raw-food restaurant probably isn’t the best idea.

So what are the best opportunities? While I cannot possibly go into all of the details in this short article, I’ll give you a few clues on some of the best ways to make money with your passion, whatever your passion may be.

Opportunity #1 — Selling Information

People are hungry for information– the right kind of information– and are willing to pay a premium price for it. Think about when you found out the truth about health… If someone could have given you that information packaged in some way that would have been really easy for you to understand, wouldn’t you have been willing to pay for that?

You can package any information you know (or have access to) in an information product and sell that for a premium price. To do it, you don’t have to be an experienced writer, you don’t have to be extremely technology-savvy, and you don’t have to invest a lot of money. You can create your own info-product in less than a week and be making money for years and years and years to come.

An information product can be a book, an e-book, a manual, a home-made CD, a photocopied manual, or a combination of multi-media. It doesn’t have to be fancy, it doesn’t have to look very professional at first, and it can sell at a very high profit margin if the information you have to share is good.

Now I sell for tens of thousands of dollars of information products each month. These include e-books, CDs, printed books, and what I call “courses”. I started with just a few, and created more over time. Some of them took me months to prepare, and others just took a week.

Whether you’re writing books, teaching classes, or starting your own website, you will need your own information-products if you want to be a big success.

Opportunity #2 — The Future Is Online

According to Paul Zane Pilzer, professor of Economics specializing in monetary trends and author of the book “The Next Millionaires”, the Internet has barely gotten started. In his book, he shows why home based entrepreneurs will be among the richest in the new economy.

If you plan to make a living in the natural health movement, you should have your own website. However, please realize that the idea most people have of what a website should do is completely outdated and no longer works.

The reason most people fail to earn money with their websites is that they don’t understand what their website should do for them. They are trying to become the “ultimate” resource of information and just want to add page after page until they build a massive online ‘thing’… which, unfortunately, fails to earn them a living. Instead, it just becomes a time-consuming hobby.

A website doesn’t have to be complicated. It can just be a few pages, and could take only a few days to set up. But there are certain elements that you must have on it. The main thing is this:

It must be obvious what you want your visitors to do on your website.

One of these purposes should be to put people on your mailing list. From there, you will cultivate a relationship with these people by sending them relevant information on a regular basis.

Instead of having tons of information you give away for free, you should always be offering your free information in exchange for an e-mail address — that is, in exchange for getting people to subscribe to your list.

That’s how you create your most precious asset: a list of people who are interested in hearing what you have to say, and ultimately, in what you have to sell.

Opportunity #3 — Teaching Seminars & Workshops

Teaching seminars and workshops can be a great way to make money in the health field while helping many, many people on a personal level. If you know what you’re doing, you can easily make $5000 to $20,000 or more with just one weekend workshop.

To start giving your own seminars and workshops, you don’t need to be a professional speaker. You just need to get started.

One thing you should do is to attend actual live seminars by people who are very successful at it, and see how you could do the same teaching health.

One of the things you will learn by watching the pros is that a good seminar isn’t about feeding people lots of “data” and “facts” — it’s more about giving people an “experience” — one that will inspire them and help them move forward in their lives.

To achieve this, you need to always be involving the participants in various group exercises, hands-on exercises where they actually apply what they just learned.

Understand that people are “hungry” for that kind of experience and will gladly pay you $500 or more for a weekend workshop. As you get better and better at it, you can easily fill the room with 100 people or more. Well, you do the math…

Conclusion

Among the best things you can do for your health and your life is to make a living with your passion. It can be exhilarating, it can be an incomparable learning experience, and it can (and should) bring you all the money you need and more.

The only thing you need to succeed is enough confidence to take action on a regular basis, and the right tools and knowledge to know what to do so.
