The Victoria County Public Health Department Environmental Health Division inspects places where food is served in Victoria, DeWitt, Jackson and Calhoun counties.

In the inspection reports, each violation in the Priority items 1-20 is 3 demerits; Priority Foundation items 21-33 are 2 demerits; and Core items are 1 demerit. Zero is a perfect score, while 100 demerits is the worst possible score.

Each Wednesday, the Advocate publishes inspection results from the previous week. All demerits are reported, but only those Priority and Core items are detailed.

FOOD SERVICE INSPECTIONS FOR WEEK ENDING JULY 27

Sarge’s, 102 W. Bay Ave., Seadrift. Demerits: 27. Improper cold-hold temperatures. All food items (crab) should not be stored in restaurant if not prepared here. Store raw food on bottom below onions and cooked food. Store medications with personal items, not in kitchen. Need bodily fluid clean-up kit. Need disclosure on menu. Date-label items in refrigerator. Need thermometer in Coke cooler. Need cooking thermometer. Do not put cups in hand sink. Yellow counter with clear top peeling off must be repaired. Needs to be easily-cleaned surface. Spray nozzle must be 2 inches above sink level when not in use. Address problem with presence of flies. Employees must wear hair restraints. Employee drinks need lids and straws and should be stored below food preparation areas. Label containers of dry ingredients, such as flour and sugar. Post certified food manager certificate.

Habanero’s Restaurant, 2128 W. Main St., Port Lavaca. Demerits: 18. Do not store food directly in thank you bags. Wash hands before glove use. Use gloves when cutting onions. Set up three-compartment sink to wash, rinse and sanitize. Add asterisk by items that can be served raw or under-cooked and by wording on menu. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Store wet towels in sanitizer buckets. All items need to be stored six inches off floor. Defrost meat under cold, running water.

Church’s Chicken No. 1463, 206 S.H. Highway 35 South, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 17. Improper cold-hold temperatures. Need employee health and personal hygiene handbook. Label spray bottles. Need food handlers certificates on file. Clean ice machine. Wear hair net with visor. Defrost frozen chunks of ice in freezer. Clean grease behind fryer. Need first-aid kit.

Cracker Barrel No. 3, 3801 N. Halsey St., Victoria. Demerits: 17. Dispose of expired canned goods. Need employee health and personal hygiene policy. Need certified food manager. Employees need food handler certificates. All ice bags need labels. Need sanitizer test strips. Clean ice machine and shelves and vents on Gatorade cooler. Women’s restroom trash can needs lid.

El Norteno Mexican Food, 4105 Port Lavaca Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 16. Improper cold-hold temperatures. Store raw chicken and fish below other food. Label sanitizer bucket. Wood surfaces in wait station area need to be easily cleanable. Need to call pest control. Store wet towels in sanitizer bucket.

Baytown Seafood Restaurant, 4010 Houston Highway, Victoria. Demerits: 13. Do not use thank-you bags to store food. Need employee health and personal hygiene policy. Need test strips. Do not use cardboard on floors. Employees must wear ball cap or hair net. Store wet towels in sanitizer bucket. Store all products 6 inches off floor.

R & C BBQ, Mobile Unit, Victoria. Demerits: 11. Need employee health and personal hygiene policy. Need water sample. Need certified food manager. Employees need food handler certificates. Keep paper goods 6 inches off floor.

Christian Multi-Ethnic Baptist Church, 601 E. Red River St., Victoria. Demerits: 10. Replace thermometer in two-door glass cooler. Need hand washing sign above hand sink. Keep soap and towels at hand sink. Women’s restroom needs covered trash can. Mop water is dumped in men’s shower/toilets. Need bodily fluid clean-up kit and employee personal hygiene handbook. Need first-aid kit in office. Recommend getting one to keep at all times in kitchen. Need chlorine test strips. Do not store Raid in kitchen. Seal gap at back door.

Edna Country Club, County Road 301, Edna. Demerits: 9. Need employee hygiene handbook. Need bodily fluid clean-up kit Need food handler certificate. Need hand sink. Post a hand-washing sign over middle compartment of three-compartment sink. Faucet needs to reach first and third compartments. Replace faucet or install hose so water will reach those compartments.

Victoria Pho, 102 Seabiscuit Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 9. Do not use T-shirt bags for food storage. Do not stack food containers on top of each other without lids. Cover all foods. Leave hand sink open. Need to have receipts of pumping contract for first-time setup. Label spray bottle Employees must wear hair restraints inside of food preparation area. Need a screen door inside mobile unit if windows are open. Window screen is too short. Needs to be long enough for window. Post permit visible to public. Post last inspection. Post certified food manager certificate.

Guerrilla Gourmet Mobile Kitchen, Mobile Unit, Point Comfort. Demerits: 8. Need bodily fluid kit. Do not store wet towels in refrigerator. Employees must wear hair restraints. Label containers. Post last inspection. Post certified food manager certificate.

Guerrilla Gourmet Mobile Kitchen, Mobile Unit, Victoria. Demerits: 8. Need bodily fluid clean-up kit. Do not store towels inside of refrigerator. Employees must wear hair restraints. Items not in original containers must be labeled. Need certified food manager certificate posted. Post last inspection.

Walmart Subway, 4101 Houston Highway, Victoria. Demerits: 7. Need an employee personal hygiene book. Need one certified food manager. Employees must have food handlers certificates.

Mama’s Kitchen, 31 N. Byer St., Port O’Connor. Demerits: 6. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Store drinks below food preparation areas. Lights need covers. Weather-strip backdoor. Store tools somewhere other than kitchen. Seal gaps.

Brown Bag Saloon, 8609 N. Navarro St., Victoria. Demerits: 6. Improper cold-hold temperature. Clean inside of ice machine. Use tub to store ice in ice box. Defrost meat under cold, running water. Fix small hole in three-compartment sink.

Copperfield Village, 501 E. Larkspur Drive, Victoria. Demerits: 6. Need a certified food manager. Store all products 6 inches off floor.

Street Treats of Victoria, Mobile Unit, Victoria. Demerits: 5. Need employee health and personal hygiene policy. Need bodily fluid kit.

Harvey’s Tavern, 2000 Lighthouse Drive, Port Lavaca. Demerits: 4. Renew permit. Need mop sink.

Chuck E. Cheese’s No. 581, 7800 N. Navarro St., No. 201, Victoria. Demerits: 4. Need soap at hand sink by preparation sink. Employees must wear ball caps or hair nets. Employee drinks need lids and straws. Need hand washing sign in restroom.
