My dog had a complete lack of interest in eating dog food. After realizing that his food brand’s manufacturer had changed the ingredients to meat by-products, and witnessing his runny and bloody stools, I was prompted to switch to a raw food diet.

RAW FOOD TIPS: BUYING FRUIT AT THE SUPERMARKET?



FREE EBOOKLET Getting quality food is one of the most important aspects of healthy eating. On a raw food diet it’s no different. That’s why it’s essential to understand that most of the time, there are exceptions, but most of the time the supermarket is NOT a good place to buy fruits and vegetables.

To succeed on a raw vegan diet it is essential that we find quality fruits that are ripe and sweet to satisfy our needs. Unripe fruits without their sugar content will not satisfy and is a recipe for failure on the high carb, low fat raw vegan diet.

Part of why the supermarket is not the best place to buy fruit has to do with how the fruit industry works on a mass scale. Fruit is picked early, kept in cold storage, “ripened” with gas and often handled poorly. It’s usually almost impossible to find good quality produce, fresh fruits and vegetables in a supermarket. The whole system is based on delivering food consistently. This means the farmer usually picks all the fruits at once, even though they are not all ripe. He has to deliver a certain volume of produce at a specific time to get paid. Then this huge delivery is taken through a big system of transport and storage, until finally, sometimes months later, it’s in the supermarket ready to be bought by the consumer.

Small scale farming and markets are a completely different story. Here the farmer will pick the fruit at a later stage in it’s development because he knows it’s only going to the local market. He might even be the one taking it there and sometimes he will even sell it himself! This way is much better and you will be able to get the freshest most delicious and ripe fruits this way.

Get to know your farmers. Get to know your food sources. Fresh food is always local food!

We need sugar to fuel our cells! Simple carbohydrates are the best source of fuel for the human body. Unless we get the sweet, ripe and juicy fruits we simply will not be satisfied and we will fail on the raw vegan diet!

Eating fruit unripe is not healthy. It contains anti nutrients and does not contain it’s full compliment of nutrition coming from the earth, water, wind and sun when it hangs on the tree to mature perfectly.

On the raw food diet, we eat the food as is, and if it’s not tasting good, it’s not healthy. People on conventional cooked diets season, spice and process their food so much it almost “doesn’t matter” if the original ingredients taste good or not, but for someone eating natural food, raw fruits and vegetables, it’s essential that the products themselves are of the highest possible quality!
