Raw Food Author and Chef Experiences Working at the Hippocrates Health Institute

Kevin: Well Nomi, welcome to this program. I'm excited to have you.

Nomi: Hi Kevin, it's good to be here.

Kevin: Why do not you start very quickly for those people who might not know who you are, just tell a little about yourself.

Nomi: OK, I'm Nomi Shannon , I have a book called, "The Raw Gourmet" which is kind of the raw food bible for people who are just starting. Especially because if you read the whole book from cover to cover you'll know everything you need to know to have a raw food kitchen. I have a newer book called, "Raw Food Celebrations" and that book is for people who want to have like a celebratory meal. The book has menus so you have an entire Italian menu for example or an entire Thai menu. It's set up so that you can prepare most of your food in advance which is an unusual thing for raw food. So that if you work from Monday through say Saturday or Friday, you can do most of the prep and then have your event on Saturday, Sunday without feeling like all you did was work.

Kevin: Right and putting together these amazing recipe books is just one part of your experience. You started out at Hippocrates correct?

Nomi: Yes, yes I worked for quite a few years at Hippocrates Health Institute which is a really wonderful, beautiful raw food retreat. The food there is very gourmet and I really am comfortable and familiar with all the aspects that come along with a raw food diet. Cleansing, healing, homeopathically, supplementation that kind of thing. People think of me as a chef and as a caterer and as a creator of recipes but raw food is on continuum from therapeutic to gourmet and really Hippocrates and places like it, such as Optimum Health Institute in San Diego, cater to the therapeutic aspects of it. When people are wanting to become well, improve their health or prevent ever becoming ill. There's a whole range that I'm familiar with and able to teach.

Kevin: Tell me a little about what kind of people that came in to Hippocrates, what kind of things helped them and how they left.

Nomi: OK, I left Hippocrates in '95 so it's quite some years since I've been there, although I've gone back quite a few times to teach because one of the things they have besides a regular three-week program, they also have a nine-week health educator program which is learning a little bit about a lot of different subjects. It's great for people who want to be in the alternative health field to help them learn all the range of things that are out there and then when they leave there they would maybe choose one or two subjects, maybe iridology which is study of the eye of the strengths and weaknesses of the body or there's just probably 15 or 20 subjects that we cover lightly and then if they want they see what they want to learn more about. So I ran that program.

The normal person that attends Hippocrates, people come there from all over the world. It is an expensive program which is why I also mention Optimum Health Institute, there's one in Texas and one in California. There's a place in Puerto Rico called The Anne Wigmore Foundation, essentially the same program. The other places I mentioned are far more affordable. I have literally seen people from every single country in the world attend these places. People have come there that were very, very ill with maybe various kinds of cancer. People have come there who have already undergone surgery, radiation, chemo, maybe became well and then a few years later something came back and they decided to take a natural route. There's another institute in Mexico called The Gerson Institute which while it's not exactly like this, they do a few different things. It's very world renowned. They are able to do things that can not be done in this country, that's why they're in Mexico. There are places in Germany, there's places all over the world. Alternative health really is what it is. There's lots of people who are completely well that go there to learn the program, to clean up their act, their nutritional act. Unfortunately it's very, very often that someone's already sick. To go to a place like Hippocrates, it's not a hospital, it's not a clinic, you can not be in bed sick. You have to be well enough to be able to take care of yourself.

Kevin: OK.

Nomi: Features of the program are wheat grass juice, sprouts; they teach you how to grow these things. You juice the grass, you drink it, that kind of thing. What sets Hippocrates apart from the other places, are the food is truly gourmet and the quality of the classes, that kind of thing. You can even learn this from books. I like people if they can, especially in the beginning, especially if they have a health challenge and they do not know much, rather than sort of desperately attempt to cobble together the information, especially if they're already panicked that they've gotten a diagnosis that frightens them, I'd like to see them go to one of these places. Let somebody else make their food for three weeks and they have classes all day long which they can attend and learn how to do it. They're immersed in it so they're simultaneously cleansing and healing and learning what to do when they go home.

It's just easier rather than try to talk to someone on the phone and then you do this and then you make this and they're not well and they're panicked. I'm like, "You know what? What's more important you're health; take a few weeks off from work, unpaid. Yes, it's a sacrifice."

Kevin: Yeah.

Nomi: But get yourself into the program , especially if you're very ill. Take that three weeks to rest and relax, you'll get lot of cleansing done in three weeks. Then you really know what you're doing when you come home.

Kevin: What are some of the things that you find that most people just need? Whether it's supplements, or it's food or things that universally will help people get on a healthier track.

Nomi: Yes. Well the whole fast food thing, everybody seems so, including me, rushed and busy, even if they're at home all the time. With the Internet and all that, people are, even a generation or two ago people made most of their food at home. Now they're getting it out. It's hard to have good nutrition when you're not making your own food and so the transition even is not from a person who makes pasta on Monday and roast beef on Tuesday and beans and franks on Wednesday. They're actually eating at home and so what their transition is, OK I'm just going to make different food. The transition now is, learn how to boil water, almost. You're not really boiling water literally when you're eating raw food but the joke is I can not even boil water to make an egg. I do not even know how to do that. The people, the generations that are coming up now, have never made food.

Kevin: Yes.

Nomi: Let alone learning how to do it at home. That's the biggest learning curve. And then people are always worried about time. So I have really, and a lot of people in the raw food movement, have figured out ways to have really great nourishment in a really small amount of time. Like you guys, I shared a smoothie with you before we turned the camera on that you had thrown together in your blender, a green smoothie. And that is, there are, they have to learn that, that's the sort of universal thing that people are learning. How to create really healthy food for themselves in a quite short amount of time. That is the biggie.

2. I’ve used a nice drink recipe anytime I want to get a flat belly that I learned about years ago from my Chinese Grandmother (and she probably learned it from HER Grandmother! haha):

Put about eight cups of water into a container along with:

– 1 x teaspoon, grated ginger

– 1 x cucumber, peeled and sliced thinly

– 1 x lemon, thinly sliced

– 10 x small spearmint leaves

Combine all the ingredients and let it stand in fridge overnight. Drink it all over the course of the next day.

It’s surprising I know, but Asian Women are skinny for a lot of reasons and this is one of them. Do it and see if it works for you.

Five Classic Diets for Fat Loss

It is not easy to choose the right diet. The fact that there are so many diets to choose from makes it even harder to center on a particular diet choice. Compounding matters even more would be the fact that there are fad diets that further cloud the weight loss picture. What can a person who wants to find the best possible diet do? For starters, you will want to take a look at the very best of the most popular diets people are taking part in.

The following is not anywhere near close to a comprehensive list of all the major diets you can take part in. It is a list than can give you quite a bit of food for thought.

• The Paleo Diet. Also dubbed the Caveman Diet, this diet entails eating food selections common to people that lived during the Paleolithic Era. • The Mediterranean Diet. As the name implies, this is a diet which is rooted in food choices indigenous to Crete, Greece, and southern Italy. Cheese, yogurts, good fats, and certain fish and poultry are the core choices with this diet. You won’t find a lot of sugars, saturated fats, or high calorie dishes in this diet which makes it an excellent diet.

• The Atkins Diet. No, the Atkin’s Diet will never go out of style because cutting carbs will always be an effective pathway to losing weight. Some may dismiss this diet because it is an older one. Be that as it may, it still works and always will.

The key to losing weight is to select the best available diet which supports your goals. There are quite a number of excellent diets to choose from and the five ones listed here are samples of them. Just stay away from the fad diets because they won’t work.

You know I have been playing with this whole raw thing for a year now but have been 100% RAW for 3 weeks now and you know it has finally clicked with what all the fuss is about!

Diabetic Dog Food – What is Good and What’s Not

As you know, the diagnosis of diabetes means there are going to be some lifestyle changes, the major changes being diet and weight management. This is the same with people and with dogs. If a veterinarian has diagnosed your dog with diabetes, your vet probably has already started advising you on which foods and brands of diabetic dog foods that your pup can eat. Here are some further dos and don’ts, a general rule of thumb, to go by when diabetic dog food is not available per se.

GOOD FOR YOUR DOG

  • A natural diet of homemade and raw foods. This does not mean table scraps–a natural diet is planned and on purpose. This way you know exactly what your dog is eating. A natural diet doesn’t have to be expensive or hard work and there are many Websites with recipes that make it easy.
  • Low fat meats. Choose high-quality meats with little fat like chicken, turkey, fish and eggs.
  • A few fresh vegetables and raw fruits. Fresh veggies and fruits in moderation (but never grapes or raisins) are high in nutrients and vitamins, and have natural sugars, which are not bad for diabetics like processed and refined sugars are.
  • Some grains. Certain grains like oats, brown rice and millet are beneficial for diabetic dogs. Used sparingly, these provide fiber which helps control insulin levels.
  • Brewer’s yeast. This contains a substance known as ‘glucose tolerance factor’ which helps the body to use blood sugar more efficiently.
  • Vitamin E. This aids in reducing the requirement for insulin.

BAD FOR YOUR DOG

  • SUGAR. Do not feed your dog ‘people food’ or dog food that has sugar in it. Be sure to check that sugar or its other forms (sucrose, fructose, syrup, etc.) is not on the list of ingredients.
  • Baked goods. Eliminate this from your dog diet, including most dog biscuits.
  • Most fats. For instance, while turkey and chicken are OK, you should remove any skin and fat before giving it to your dog. Generally, you should not be giving your dog any foods that have been prepared in fats. A touch of fat is healthy and is already found naturally in meat. Other OK fats are quality fish oils.
  • An all meat diet. Over time, this type of diet is harmful because of mineral and other imbalances. Dogs need balance found in grains and vegetables as well.
  • Fatty meats. Meats with highly saturated fats like beef, ground beef, and pork should not be given.
  • Most dry dog foods. Most dry dog foods are mainly made up of simple carbohydrates–not what a diabetic dog needs. However, dry diabetic dog foods are generally safe, but you still want make sure it is high in protein and vegetables. You still want to be sure to supplement dry food with quality wet food.
  • Cornmeal. Some nutritionists also advise cornmeal, but sometimes dogs have allergic reactions to wheat and corn.

Just as with people, a dog with diabetes can have a high quality of life with a balanced lifestyle that includes a good diet, medication if necessary and regular exercise.

Easy Raw Food Recipe Secret – How to Make Healthy Pineapple Ice Cream! – Free Raw Recipe

If you want to eat healthy but still enjoy ice cream-like desserts there is a great, easy, raw pineapple ice cream dessert you can make. Raw fooders have been making this ice cream for a long time and it’s a great standby raw recipe. It isn’t really made with cream but the texture is that of ice cream, sorbet or sherbet. It’s a real surprise when you make it for the first time.

It’s simple and one of the easiest recipes to make if you want to eat healthy and want your family, friends and guests to eat healthy too. The kids love it. I have served it many times and no one even guessed that it wasn’t really ice cream in fact people ask for it over and over again when they come to visit or when I serve it at events.

Of course it’s a little hard to take to potlucks unless you’re having it at home because it needs to be kept frozen. It’s best served right after you make it. I often make it after my family or guests have arrived, but you don’t have to. You can make it ahead of time and just keep it in the freezer.

Pineapple is one of most nutritious foods on the planet. It contains carbohydrates, proteins, fats, water, calcium, phosphorous, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium, chlorine, sulphur and manganese. It has high amounts of vitamin C and has vitamin A, B1 and B2 among others. The proteolytic (protein-digesting) enzyme bromolain (sometimes spelled bromolin) is responsible for healing and curing many diseases and conditions and new discoveries are made for it all the time.

So here’s the easy raw recipe.

Hard to believe but there is only one ingredient. It’s best made in a Champion juicer or Green Life, Green Power or Green Star Juicer or any juice extractor that has a homogenizing blank, however, it can be made in a food processor too. Centrifugal type juicers usually won’t work though – the mass market kind. You can try it if you have a juicer.

If you have a Trader Joe’s in your area you can easily find frozen pineapple tidbits they have in the frozen food case. Or you can use frozen pineapple from any other store it doesn’t matter. If you can’t buy frozen pineapple you can buy fresh chunks and freeze them or cut up fresh pineapple and freeze them.

I’ve found fresh pineapple from Costco seems to be the cheapest running around $3 per pineapple. Produce people have told me they grow like weeds in Hawaii and it’s doubtful they’re sprayed with chemicals. Cooked or canned pineapple won’t work and don’t contain bromolain, which is destroyed when it’s heated.
