The Raw Milk Cure

Raw milk (from cows, goats, yaks, horses, sheep) has historically been considered a superfood. It has been used both in the daily diet (often fermented) and by special groups with extra nutritional needs, like the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, warriors, and sick people. An ancient Babylon text tells how raw milk was used to drive out the demons of sickness, “Bring milk and laban [curdled milk] that man become as pure as laban; like that milk may he become pure.”(1)

A portion of raw milk was drunk fresh and warm from the cow (or other animal), but a lot of it was fermented, or cultured, into a variety of delicious products – yoghurt, kefir, cheeses, lacto-fermented beverages, etc. – due to both the lack of refrigeration and primitive people’s knowledge of the health benefits of “probiotics”.

As early as the 1800’s, we have documented texts of medical doctors using a diet composed exclusively of raw milk to heal an incredible variety of diseases – ranging from asthma and diabetes to colitis, obesity and tuberculosis. How does raw milk work to heal such a variety of very different disorders?

Many of my readers who have gone on The IBD Remission Diet (an elemental diet used to induce disease remission) also found that a variety of other illnesses cleared up at the same time. This is one of the reasons I refer to the time on the Diet as a “healing spa”. If the digestive system is the foundation of health in the body, and natural healing heals the entire body holistically, then of course you are going to see positive results in all aspects of your health. All of your organs and systems will heal and balance, over time, given the necessary tools. An elemental diet – and raw milk is truly the first, original elemental diet, provides the body with the tools to heal holistically.

In his book, The Untold Story of Milk, naturopathic physician Ron Schmid writes:

“According to late 19th century proponents, the ‘secret’ of the milk cure lies in the fact good raw milk is a food the body easily turns into good blood. In illness there is one or both of two conditions in the blood: insufficient quantity, or abnormal quality. The milk diet corrects both and, acting through the blood and the circulation, heals the cells and thus the tissues and organs. The muscles on a milk diet harden, almost like an athlete’s, because they are pumped full of blood, as are the organs.”(2)

However, there are some rules that need to be followed. As with The IBD Remission Diet, there are some crucial guidelines that need to be implemented to have success with the raw milk cure. Some of the doctors who used the raw milk cure with patients in the 1800’s through to the 1930’s used raw milk in conjunction with mild, easily digestible foods like fruit. But the vast majority swore by the need to consume only fresh, raw milk, and vast quantities of it.

One of the most prolific of these doctors, Charles Sanford Porter MD, published a book called, Milk Diet as a Remedy for Chronic Disease in 1905. In the book he relates how at least 18,000 patients had been on the raw milk diet under his care in the last 37 years. This was not some fad diet, or quick-flash trend. This was a solid, scientifically proven method for healing mild to severe disorders. In 1929, one of the founders of the Mayo Foundation (forerunner to the Mayo Clinic), J.E. Crew MD reported that he had been successfully using the raw milk treatment for the last 15 years. He said, “The results obtained in various types of disease have been so uniformly excellent that one’s conception of disease and its alleviation is necessarily changed. When sick people are limited to a diet containing an excess of vitamins and all the elements necessary to growth and maintenance, they recover rapidly without the use of drugs and without bringing to bear all the complicated weapons of modern medicine.”(3)

The great thing is that many medical doctors in the U.S., Russia and Germany published their work and results using raw milk diets from the early 1800’s to early 1900’s, so we have good guidelines for implementation. Personally, from my experience with elemental diets and the rationale behind them, I agree with the majority of doctors who found that if you mixed other foods with the raw milk diet, it was not nearly as successful. The only other food I think you could mix with raw milk and perhaps see an added benefit from is clear homemade bone broths – boiled from organic meat and bones. I say this both because I have an intuitive sense that this would be okay (and perhaps add to the healing power of the regime), and because homemade bone broths have been very beneficial for people on The IBD Remission Diet.

Rules For The Raw Milk Cure

After perusing the writings of various doctors who worked extensively with raw milk treatments, here are the crucial implementation guidelines if you’d like to give the raw milk diet a try:

  • Use raw, untreated milk from pasture-fed cows only – milk has the highest curative value in spring and early summer when cows are eating new, high vitamin grass. Do not use milk from grain-fed or barn-bound cows.
  • Higher fat milk (from Jersey cows) is ideal. Be sure to use full-fat milk only (not 2% or skim).
  • The average adult must consume at least 3 – 4 quarts of raw milk per day. You can consume up to 10 quarts per day, if you wish (note: 4 cups = 1 quart).
  • Minimum duration of raw milk diet is 4 weeks to see good results. Follow with gradual food introduction of easily digested foods.
  • You must have complete rest during the diet – do not work, take care of family, go to school, etc. This is exactly what I advise people on The IBD Remission Diet, because healing takes a lot of energy.
  • Do not consume any other foods or beverages whilst on the diet, except filtered or spring water.

The importance of strictly adhering to these guidelines is summed up in the words of Dr. Charles Sanford Porter, MD:

“It is wrong, if not positively dangerous, to attempt the exclusive milk diet on any amount of milk less than that required to noticeably stimulate the circulation and promote body growth. There is no halfway method of taking the milk diet for people who have much the matter with them. Enough milk must be taken to create new circulation, new cells, and new tissue growth, and cause prompt elimination of the waste and dead matter that may be poisoning the system. With milk alone, digestion and assimilation may go on throughout practically the whole length of the alimentary canal. The addition of even a cracker to the milk seems to cause the stomach to hold all its contents for hours without discharging much into the intestine.”(4)

How Long Do I Stay On The Diet?

Now you may be wondering how long you can safely stay on a raw milk diet. Amazingly, there is no limit. Raw cow’s milk from pasture-fed cows is a complete, perfect food all by itself. In his book, The Untold Story of Milk, Ron Schmid ND, relates numerous stories of people who lived in perfect health for up to 50 years on raw milk alone. Here’s just one of many examples; this is a letter from a man in Burlington, Iowa in 1913:

“I have lived on a strictly milk diet for the past forty-two years, not as a matter of choice, but from the fact that I am unable to take solid food of any kind, even a crumb of bread. At the age of two I took a dose of concentrated lye, which caused a stricture of the food pipe and since then have lived on a milk diet. I believe I have gotten along better than the man who eats. I am five feet, six inches tall, weigh one hundred and forty pounds, and am married and have four strong, healthy children. I take one quart at each mealtime and none between meals. My health is good, in fact I have never been ill in forty-two years.”(5)

Dr. Schmid goes on to give many different examples of people who have had excellent health living on nothing but raw cow’s milk for 3 – 50 years. This is very liberating information! Imagine if elderly people in nursing homes were given raw milk instead of Boost, Ensure and processed foods? Imagine if people with obstructions and strictures were given raw milk, rather than surgery, or having their colon removed?

How To Introduce Raw Milk

People with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are often very hesitant to try raw milk due to bad experiences with pasteurized milk and sensitivity to milk proteins (keep in mind these proteins have been denatured by the pasteurization process). So what’s the best way to start and test whether you can take advantage of this amazing superfood? Here are the guidelines I’ve used with myself and my children (who were not allowed to drink pasteurized milk) to introduce raw milk and test for tolerance:

  • Make sure you only use untreated, full-fat, raw milk from pasture-fed cows
  • If you have been highly sensitive to milk in the past, then start by making yoghurt from the raw milk. Raw milk yoghurt is the most highly tolerated of all raw milk products. Eat a small amount of yoghurt each day and gradually build up (see Jini’s Raw Milk Yoghurt Recipe below).
  • If you like the yoghurt and tolerate it well, then you can make an Indian yoghurt drink called a lassi: Add a pinch of cardamom powder, nutmeg powder and your desired sweetener (stevia, maple syrup, honey) and stir to mix. Add some warm filtered water if the texture is too thick.
  • If you want to drink the raw milk straight, it’s best if you drink it in isolation from other foods. For example, have it first thing in the morning and don’t eat or drink anything else with it – consume it as you would an elemental shake (all by itself, on an empty stomach).
  • Warm the milk slightly to room temperature or lukewarm before drinking (but don’t make it hot/boiling or you will kill the good bacteria and enzymes that facilitate digestion). Cold milk can be a shock to the system and harder to digest.

Before we found a source of raw milk, my kids would occasionally have a glass of pasteurized milk at a friend’s house. And within half an hour they would have a bowel movement. Now keep in mind that my kids are perfectly healthy, with one formed bowel movement per day. If pasteurized milk affects them so negatively, imagine what it does to an already compromised digestive system? Raw milk is completely different. My kids drink as much raw milk per day as they wish and they still have only one formed bowel movement per day. I drink raw milk straight, eat raw milk cheeses, raw milk yoghurt, and make a shake from raw eggs and raw milk, and I’ve never felt better! JINI’S RAW MILK YOGHURT RECIPE

Traditional yoghurt recipes call for the milk to be heated to 180 degrees Fahrenheit, however, this destroys the beneficial enzymes present in raw milk. Therefore, I prefer to not heat the milk beyond 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43°C). However, this usually results in a runny yoghurt (not firm). If you’re going to use your yoghurt in shakes, smoothies or lassis, this is fine. However, if you prefer to eat firm yoghurt, you will need to add gelatin to help firm it up. So the recipe here includes gelatin, but if you’re okay with runny yoghurt, then follow the recipe as is, minus the gelatin.

  • 4 cups raw whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons of Natren Yogurt Starter
  • 1 glass quart jar with lid, sterilized
  • 1 teaspoon powdered gelatin

1. Pour 4 cups of milk into a saucepan and sprinkle gelatin over surface of milk. Let sit for 5 minutes while gelatin dissolves.

2. Over low heat, stirring constantly, slowly bring the milk to 110°F (43°C), or until you can keep your finger in the milk while you count to 10.

3. Put the yogurt starter into the wide-mouth quart-size sterilized glass jar. Pour in about 1/2 cup milk and stir to mix really well with the starter.

4. Fill the jar with the rest of the milk, stir lightly, and screw on the lid.

5. Wrap the jar in a towel and let sit in a warm place*, for eight hours.

6. Unwrap and place in the refrigerator. Allow yoghurt to set in fridge (about four hours). If you want an even firmer yoghurt, next time add 1.5 or 2 teaspoons of gelatin.

*If you don’t have a warm place, then put it inside your oven with the oven light on. Do not turn on the oven, just turn on the oven light and close the oven door. If you have a yoghurt-maker, use the recipe here and then follow instructions for your yoghurt-maker for incubation – but still best to incubate for 8 hours.

Note: Do not mix fruit or sweeteners directly into your main batch of yoghurt, as this will interfere negatively with probiotic activity and potency during storage. However, it is perfectly fine to scoop out a portion of yoghurt and mix in some fruit, jam, maple syrup or honey immediately prior to eating – just don’t mix these in with your main batch that remains in the fridge.

Raw Food Christmas Party

So, you’ve had enough of the conventional unhealthy food you’ve been eating on Christmas Day or Thanksgiving Day year in, year out? You want to be able to celebrate in style but you desire a different approach in the food department – a healthier approach.

You’ve decided to have a Raw Food Christmas party for a change but are not quite sure what you can make? Perhaps you are a raw foodist or just like the idea of eating fresh and healthy food for a change. You want to abandon the overcooked stodgy food that makes you feel tired and lethargic afterwards and reaching for the alcohol to digest it (well, acid is a corrosive force!)

The thing about raw food today is that it doesn’t have to just be lettuce and fruit. Of course, that is very healthy but in temperate climates your body will eventually demand something more satisfying and filling. The answer is ‘raw gourmet food’. There are numerous raw chefs and even novices out there creating a style of prepared raw food that is inventive, classy and delicious. Why not give it a try? All you need are a few basic ingredients: – fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and seasonings. You can elaborate later with raw cacao, coconut butter, raw sweeteners etc.

A raw fruit pie can be made by grinding 1 cup of whole nuts in a nut grinder or coffee grinder and then mixing with ½ cup soft dates. Press the mixture into a lined pie dish. For the filling, blend 2 bananas with ½ cup blueberries and ½ cup cashew nuts. Add 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and blend until smooth. Pour the cream into your crust. Set in the fridge for up to an hour. You can also decorate the pie with fresh fruits. This is a very basic recipe but you would do well to get a raw food recipe book to master the art of creative gourmet raw food. You might also consider attending a raw food class where you will learn all the basics in raw cuisine. It’s really quite simple once you become familiar with the ingredients. You can even make your own raw chocolate!

As an experienced plant food eater, what will I be making for my Raw Food Christmas Party this year?

*Apple Spice Punch

*Cream of Parsnip Soup with Petit Pain

*Pecan Nutloaf with Garlic Mushrooms and Pine Nut Sauce

*Honey Walnuts

*Chocolate Torte with Cream

*Festive Mince Pies with (B)randy Sauce

Over the New Year, I will make Mushroom Tarts, Crispy Kale, Cheesy Flax Crackers with Seed Cheese, Scottish Shortbread and Chocolates.

Is your mouth watering yet? You too could also create your very own raw festive feast for you and your family this year. Why not make Christmas and Thanksgiving a healthier celebration for everyone involved and include some tantalizing life-giving raw food on the menu? Once you’ve tried raw gourmet food, you will see how easy it is to eat healthily and still enjoy your food. So go on, try some raw food today. You and your loved ones deserve to be healthy. Have a happy and healthy festive time!

List of Mucusless (Mucus-Free) Foods

The word “mucusless,” or mucus-free, refers to foods that are not pus or mucus-forming inside the human body. Such foods digest without leaving behind a thick, viscous, slimy substance called mucus in the gastrointestinal tract. These foods include all kinds of fat-free, and starchless, fruits and vegetables. The term was coined in the early 1900s by dietitian and healer Prof. Arnold Ehret in his book the Mucusless Diet Healing System. The Mucusless Diet consists of all kinds of raw and cooked fruits, starchless vegetables, and cooked or raw, mostly green-leaf vegetables. The Mucusless Diet as a Healing System is a combination of individually advised long and short-term fasts, menus that progressively change to non-mucus-forming raw foods, and other therepies such as sun-bathing, exercise, colon irrigation, etc. Ehret observes that the accumulation of uneliminated waste materials by eating pus, mucus, and acid-forming foods, is the foundation of human illness.

The following list is certainly not exhaustive, but these are some of the most common mucusless (mucus-free) foods. Eating more of these foods in the right combinations is an important part of transitioning toward a mucus-free diet.

The Transition Diet

It is very important that people learn how to transition from the most harmful mucus-forming foods to the ones that leave behind the least amount of waste. Many people mistakenly believe that Ehret’s work is inherently, or only, raw-foodism or fruitarianism. Yet Ehret emphasizes moving away from all mucus-forming foods above all else. Although the highest levels of the Mucusless Diet are raw mucus-free foods, Ehret advocates using cooked mucusless foods, and even some mildly mucus-forming items, when necessary during the Transition Diet. To learn more about this transitional process, check out Arnold Ehret’s Mucusless Diet Healing System: Annotated, Revised, and Edited by Prof. Spira.

Crohn’s Disease and Colitis Patients Should Avoid MSG and Stick to Raw Food

A healthy diet does not include monosodium glutamate (referred to as MSG). This fact holds true for everyone – especially Crohn’s Disease and Colitis patients. The primary source of MSG is processed foods. The Western diet of fats, sugars, and processed foods is believed to be the culprit responsible for the prevalence of Crohn’s Disease and Colitis in North American society.

Patients with these conditions do much better with a diet of fruits and vegetables. In fact, many people claim that they have found a way to manage (and even eliminate) their uncomfortable symptoms. Some patients say that taking part in a water fast followed by a regular raw food diet worked for them. Of course, nobody should start a fast or make drastic changes to their diet without checking with their medical proffessional.

Mostly, people do not have problems with a diet of fruit and vegetables. Yet the body has to go through a period of adjustment to its new “fuel.” People with multiple conditions may experience temporary challenges with a raw food diet. It is always better for patients to check with their own medical proffessional.

In almost every case, fruits and vegetables will be the best choice. A diet saturated with MSG is never the right choice. In fact, Dr. Russell Blaylock, a neurosurgeon and author of “Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills,” names monosodium glutamate as “the taste that kills.” That designation makes a powerful statement.

Yet Dr. Blaylock insists that MSG deserves that disturbing title. According to this physician, monosodium glutamate use can result in brain damage. In addition, this harmful substance can worsen diseases including Lou Gehrig’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease as well as other serious conditions. The doctor even believes that MSG can increase the level of a learning disability.

MSG is thought to cause headaches, eye damage, and even depression. Monosodium glutamate has been linked to short-term and long-term effects. A series of complications has been attributed to MSG. Indeed, there are reports that MSG has led to death under certain circumstances.

Obviously, this unhealthy substance will hinder rather than help anyone with Crohn’s Disease and Colitis. These sufferers should be looking for the healthiest choice. Sticking to a raw food diet is the best way to avoid monosodium glutamate.

Sold originally decades ago in the US under the brand name ‘Accent’ (a meat tenderizer), today’s MSG can be harder to spot in foods at the supermarket. Monosodium glutamate shows up in salad dressings, canned soups, frozen dinners, and a variety of other products. The scariest fact about MSG is that it has been found on occasion in baby foods and formulas.

Monosodium glutamate must be listed on labels. Yet ‘free glutamic acid’ (a MSG component) does not have to appear on a list of ingredients. By choosing a raw food diet, Crohn’s Disease and Colitis sufferers can avoid this “MSG mess.” Even when dining out, everyone must still be vigilant about their consumption of MSG. When you choose fresh food over processed products, it becomes much easier to avoid substances with no health benefits but plenty of harmful effects.

Raw Food Detox Diet – Cleanse, Lose Weight and Rejuvenate

People now, more than ever, turn to raw food diet detox in order to cleanse their bodies properly. This is because it offers enzymes, vitamins, nutrients and properties that are lost during the cooking process, as they get killed off from the high heat. The raw food diet detox has been known to help people lose weight, improve their overall health, increase stamina, and provide higher chances of longevity. This detox will provide macrobiotic aid, and will emphasize health by avoiding foods which are highly processed or refined. Such foods not only make us fat, but sets our entire system out of balance, due to their high sugary, fat and chemical content.

Most health problems humanity suffers from today, can be linked to the foods we eat and how they are processed. A macrobiotic raw food diet detox, also addresses the benefits of eating smaller portions and chewing thoroughly in order for the digestive system to be able to work properly. This aid in obtaining the highest values of all the foods consumed thought-out the day. It is true that a nice hot a great bowl of soup tastes great, so do cooked vegetables, but in being prepared that way, robs them of their natural goodness.

However, eating in a poor way, meats and foods which have been processed is doing nothing good for the proper function of our bodies. This is why so many people are now turning to a raw food diet detox in order to give their digestive system a much needed break form synthetic and processed foods. Doing so, allows the body to give itself a gentle “tune up”, as raw foods deliver a wealth of extra vitamins, which boosts the health and immune system, which leads overall better health in the long run. The good news is the recipes are very simple to follow and a joy to eat.

From preparing a dish for one or for company, it really can’t get any simpler or healthier than this. If making a total switch to raw foods is what interest you the most, feel great in knowing that what you will be feeding your family, will be the most wholesome and healthiest foods they’ll ever eat. A raw food detox diet will cleanse your colon, cleanse your blood and rinse out bad stuff that has been accumulating in your colon, and your organs for years! This is one of the reasons as to why so many people lose weight and feel great after finishing their raw food diet detox. Whenever possible, and for best results, a raw food diet detox should be with organic ingredients. This will assure that everything being consumed is totally free of chemicals and pesticides.

Keratosis Pilaris Diet – The Right Foods To Diminish Your KP

If you’re after the Keratosis Pilaris diet you’ve come to the right place. There are some delicious foods you can eat to improve the condition of your skin but before I detail what they are let me share with you some information about Keratosis Pilaris first.

Keratosis Pilaris (KP) or “chicken skin” is a benign skin disorder that affects almost 80% of people of all ages but can be more common to children and adolescents. It is characterized by scattered patchy rashes or small red bumps on the skin, closely resembling goose bumps. It can typically be found at the back, in the arms, thighs or buttocks. It is usually chronic and can either get worse or better over time. It is not contagious and does not cause serious skin health problems. Although not medically alarming, it can however be quite distressing or unsightly for most people.

Keratosis Pilaris is a genetic disorder and is deemed to be incurable though sometimes it can clear itself without using any treatment. However, there are many treatments available that can control its symptoms so a person who is suffering from this skin condition should not feel discouraged at all. Many all-natural home remedies can also be done to moisturize and cleanse the skin so that this skin condition can be treated. It is also believed that diet can affect the chicken bumps on your skin. In fact, many people rely on a Keratosis Pilaris diet and do not take on any form of medication.

Some believe that diet does not affect KP at all but others believe that a healthy dose of foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids can help alleviate the effects of this skin disorder and improve the texture of the skin.

Some foods that are rich in Omega-3 are salmon, scallops, sardines, soybeans, walnuts, tofu and flax seeds.

A Keratosis pilaris diet should also consist of raw foods, especially vegetables, so that the nutrients can be quickly absorbed by the body. In fact, one should opt to switch to a vegan diet even for just half a year to be able to observe noticeable positive results. A vegan diet excludes meat, eggs and dairy products. It is also a good idea to completely stop eating junk foods.

In your diet, one should also avoid drinking coffee, alcoholic drinks and soda. One more thing to avoid is the protein gluten. This protein can be found in foods such as wheat, cereal, barley, rye, flavorings, stabilizers and many processed foods and beverages. On the other hand, Gluten-free foods include beans, potato, soy, rice and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Eating only vegetables and grains and moving away from the delicious foods we are used to can be quite difficult. But this is not an impossible task if you are seriously determined to reduce the symptoms of Keratosis Pilaris without buying expensive creams or having to pay costly medical bills. Eating foods rich in antioxidants is proven to be helpful for all skin types. Having a healthy diet can be quite beneficial to the overall health of a person and can even help to maintain a healthy weight.

However, one must not solely rely on diet as there are many natural home remedies to treat your Keratosis Pilaris.

Raw Food VS Processed Food

One of the main reasons why most people are getting ill with 21 century diseases like: diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and obesity is eating processed foods as their foremost form of nutrition. Over eighty percent of the foodstuff Americans buy every year are mechanically processed foods, and food marketers do a wonderful job at making it seem that mass produced processed and junk food are the apparent choice.

The problem is that processed foods, are nutrient dead and are devoid of any real nutrition. The reason that they taste so good is the result of a combination of a chemical cocktail of artificial flavours and additives, without which this artificial processed food would have the look and flavour of cardboard. But what the food industry forgets to inform you is that there is a terrible price to pay for consuming this pitiful diet. For the sake of convenience we are trading the most valuable assets that we have, our health.

This food ingredient alone is enough to completely wreck your health, and it is only one of the dangerous ingredients in processed foods. One of the terrible side effects of eating a mainly processed food regime is that it means we’re also consuming foods that are choc full of high-fructose corn syrup. High-fructose corn syrup is the greatest source of calories in ones diet. This chemical food cocktail is enough to completely destroy your health, and sadly it is only one of many dangerous ingredients in chemically processed foods.

Are You Addicted to a poisonous Diet?

Processed foods are mainly chemically altered so they appeal to your taste buds, they can also trick your body’s regulatory signals that would normally tell you it’s had enough to eat – snacks like potatoes chips (you know the kind that make you want to eat the whole bag- check the packaging)! These chemical cocktails are crammed full of large amounts of sugar, salt, corn syrup and MSG, these radically increase the chances of you becoming addicted to them.

In one study of laboratory rats that were fed a diet that contained 25 percent sugar, they became fretful when the sugar was taken away – displaying symptoms akin to people going through drug withdrawals, such as: the shakes and shivering. The researchers who conducted the study found a causal link between opioids, (the brains pleasure chemicals) and a feverish craving for sweet, salty and fatty foods. It is thought that these high-fat foods excite the opioids, as when the researchers stimulated the rats’ brains with an artificial version of the natural opioid enkephalin, and the lab rats ate nearly six times their usual intake of fat.

It was also noticed that long lasting changes occurred in the rats’ brain chemistry – which are similar to those caused by heroin or morphine use. According to researchers, this is understood to mean that even casual exposure to pleasurable foods is sufficient to alter gene expression, which would suggest an addiction to the food.

Processed Foods Can Ruin Your Taste Buds

In the meantime, refined sugar, which is in nearly all processed food – because it is cheap and improves the taste of the food, has been demonstrated to be more addictive than cocaine! Your body’s sweet receptors (two protein receptors that are located on your tongue), are not adapted to cope with high-sugar consumption. Therefore, this abnormally high stimulation of these receptors by sugar-rich diets generates extreme reward signals in your brain, which have the possibility to override the normal self-control mechanism, and thus can lead to an insidious addiction. This is why, if you regularly have a diet of processed foods, some whole foods seem to be lacking in flavour. This is because you have become conditioned to think that these chemically changed foods are the norm, when in fact – it is quite the opposite.

The unfortunate truth is that when you have a mainly processed food diet – it leads to a flood of harmful changes to your body’s metabolism. One of these negative effects is elevated insulin levels, and ultimately an insulin resistance. Elevated insulin levels are the foundation of nearly every major disease known to man, such as: cancer cardiovascular disease and arthritis. Most people think that if they can’t have their junk food, they are being deprived. In actuality, the sooner you change your eating regime, the quicker you’ll enjoy increased vitality, weight stability, improved mood and enhanced health. If you decide to try the raw food diet – I suggest you do it gradually – beginning with one meal a day. A target of 70% raw food is comfortably achievable.

If You Give Up Processed Foods, Should You Eat Raw Food?

It’s a really wise decision to have as much raw food in your diet as possible. There are a number of sound reasons for this. For starters, cooking food, especially at high temperatures, destroys those naturally occurring enzymes. Enzymes are proteins. They are the catalysts that help speed up and make possible reactions in your body. In point of fact, some biochemical reactions will never occur without these enzymes (we each have about 1,300 of them). So if all nearly all of your food is cooked, your body is going to be deficient in the enzymes it needs to function efficiently. Ideally you’ll want to eat as many foods as possible in an unprocessed state – organic grown fruits and vegetables that have been grown locally and in season.

It is wise to seek medical advice before trying the raw food diet. It is not recommended that you give up meat altogether, eating meat three times a week is sufficient to obtain most of the nutrients and trace minerals that you require for a healthy diet.

Raw Food Recipe – Mushroom Stroganoff

I have to confess that a good, flavoursome, creamy mushroom stroganoff has always been one of my favourite “cooked food” recipes, so I decided to experiment today with a raw version and how did it go? Suffice to say I just licked the plate clean. Yes, really!

Here’s the recipe we created this evening for Raw Food Mushroom Stroganoff:

Time:

2 hours’ soaking (cashews), which can happen during the dehydration time ~ 15 minutes for chopping & preparation ~ 2-3 hours in dehydrator, to warm through

Ingredients:

Sauce

1/2 cup cashews – soaked for 2 hours & rinsed

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon tamari

generous teaspoon dark miso paste

1/2 cup water

1 level teaspoon dried zatar seasoning or 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves & a sprinkle of sesame seeds

1 level teaspoon paprika powder

Small pinch of sea salt

The rest!

1 large Portobello-style mushroom

5 or 6 chestnut mushrooms

2 spring onions (scallions)

1 small clove garlic

Served with:

4-5 cabbage leaves

1 tablespoon olive oil

sprinkling of your favourite sprouted seeds

Optional: a handful of coriander leaves

How To Make It

  1. Chop the Portobello mushroom into bite-sized pieces. Slice the chestnut mushrooms finely.
  2. To make the mushroom marinade: mix the water, zatar (or equivalent), miso, tamari, paprika, salt and crushed garlic.
  3. Put the mushrooms in a dish and mix well with the marinade sauce. Leave for a couple of hours – this will allow the mushrooms to absorb the flavours and also soften them, so they taste “cooked”! If you prefer your food “warm” (like me!) then let it marinade for those 2 or so hours in the dehydrator – set to 105 F or about 41C.
  4. Whilst the mushrooms are marinading, you can soak your cashews for an hour or 2. Drain & rinse well.
  5. While your cashews / mushrooms are doing their thing, shred the cabbage leaves finely and mix well with the olive oil. Sprinkle with your favourite sprouted seeds and leave to soften for a couple of hours – they’ll do it on their own. You don’t need to do anything. This really is laissez-faire “cookery”!
  6. Put the cashews into a high speed blender with the lemon juice. You’ll probably need to add 3 or 4 tablespoons of water. Blitz to a smooth puree.
  7. When you’re ready to eat, mix the cashew / lemon paste into the mushrooms. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves, if you happen to have any around. Add some ground black pepper, if you like.
  8. Serve with the shredded cabbage leaves.

I have just eaten this recipe this evening and both of us really, really, really licked the plates clean. We ate a fraction of the food we would have eaten, had it been cooked stroganoff with a mound of rice, yet we feel full, nourished and light – vibrant!

Variation: You could add strips of red pepper to the mushroom mix, prior to their 2 hours of marinading, to intensify the flavours even further.

If you get the chance to give this recipe a go, please let us know how you get on. And please feel free to share it with your friends via Facebook & Twitter!

Giblets – Great Raw Food!

Thanksgiving is a great time of the year because it is a time when many of us make a point of getting together with friends and family to give thanks for our blessings and to celebrate and enjoy each other’s company… not to mention sharing that fabulous meal!

If you’re enjoying a turkey dinner over the holidays, don’t forget that your dog can join in too! There is nothing wrong with feeding your dog the giblets (neck, liver and heart) at the holidays when you have a turkey! When removing them from the bird thaw them like normal, in a bowl, and then feed them to your dog outside or in a crate. Never thaw in the microwave as this destroys the natural enzymes in the meat and always thoroughly disinfect all surfaces that have come in contact with raw meat.

Organ meat is great for dogs as a treat once in a while because it is packed full of healthy vitamins and minerals. It does have a lot of vitamin A however, which can be harmful to dogs if ingested over an extended period of time, so to avoid an overdose, limit intake to no more than once a week to once a month.

I have to say that whenever my family has a turkey dinner, we never forget to give the dog the giblets. She loves it and raw turkey bones are also a great way to clean her teeth! Remember all giblets should be fed completely raw and should never be cooked. Cooking will make the bones sharp, splintery and dangerous and will take away from the foods’ nutritional value, so remember – ALWAYS RAW, your dog will thank you for it!

2 Years on Raw Paleo Diet Testimonial

Raw Paleo Diet is the original human diet before agriculture. Raw Paleo Diet is raw fruit, raw vegetables and raw organic / wild fatty animal food. The theory is that the human body is one of nature’s best creations. We are self healing and always healthy given the original human diet. As a foundation to curing most diseases, sticking to a raw paleo diet every day will bring dramatic, sustainable results.

My raw paleo diet adventure came about with my desperate search for the cure for everything that afflicted me. The challenges to my life always needed a solution. Being trained as an engineer, a computer geek, a problem solver, led me to finding ultimate solutions or else.

Born in 1969, I grew up just like every urban kid on baby formula, drugs, some fast food, lots of cooked food and following the debunked food pyramid of high cooked carbs and low fat.

When I was a child I was diagnosed with asthma and doctors prescribed anti-histamine drugs. When I had cystic acne at 16, dermatologists bombarded me with steroid injections and creams. Finally one decided I should take an experimental drug called Ro-Accutane. We had to go to the drug company main office and sign a waiver for their drug was experimental and severe side effects were possible.

In 2004 while visiting the beaches of Boracay I got bit by sandflies and suffered for 2 whole years of itching all over my arms and legs. After months on steroid injections and steroid creams, I gave up and just let it be and in 2006 the suspected leishmaniasis went away.

All throughout my life I had foliculitis, got red splotches on my body when I took a bath, got easily faintly tired with strenuous activity, had heart burns, left rotation shoulder pain, was hospitalized for various unknown viral diseases and had some heart murmur called mitral valve prolapse and became obese at 170 pounds and wore 38″ waistline pants.

Beginning with my spouse and I’s secondary infertility adventure in 2002 led us to clean up our diet eliminating junk foods and eliminating anything not edible from being put on our skin and throwing away the microwave oven. And using raw oysters to increase sperm counts.

In the same 2002 while trying to conceive I came down with an unknown viral illness, was hospitalized for 3 days, then suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome for 1 month. The heart doctor who ordered a battery of tests said nothing came out of the tests so he wanted to shape my heart by prescribing a heart shaping medicine called beta blockers but it may kill off my erections! This was so unacceptable to my core personality as I only had one child and my life goal was at least more than 4. I sternly refused the drugs and found out that by merely eliminating all sources of caffeine I was able to cure myself in 3 weeks.

When my 2nd child was born in September 2003 I was obese at 170 pounds, I desperately wanted to lose weight to look sexy enough to have more children. I blindly attempted to follow a cooked Atkins diet. I then sought the teachings of a mainstream western medicine nutritionist and she taught me the way to reduce weight was to reduce the starches and up the vegetables. I did lose weight and maintained some 140 pounds for some time. But I still was not healthy.

In 2003 a small eczema began on my lower right leg, it was a good itch, I paid no mind to it. It became full blown in middle of 2005 I had full blown eczema with the size of a steak on my right leg, on my whole face, my ears, my left arm. I was a mess, I could not work, I could not go out, all 5 doctors I saw told me I was INCURABLE and I was going to be this way for the rest of my life.

The incurable diagnosis was unacceptable for me. I was always the open minded type. No DOGMA was my motto in life. I’m an engineer, a problem solver, if these so called “doctors” said I was incurable, it only meant THEY DID NOT KNOW the cure and that their common educational foundation was AMISS. I had to find people who DID KNOW the cure… NON-DOCTORS so I drove to a far away town where there were NO western medical doctors, and my true health learning journey began with a 3rd generation herbalist named Manang Lorna.

I learned about electro-medicine, herbs and detoxing: kidney cleanses, liver flushes, colon cleanses and many other cleanses which eliminated my eczema symptoms. Free of eczema symptoms. But I wanted more. I wanted vibrant health. I knew there was more and I wanted to be healthy so bad I just had to learn more. All detox and no diet change meant no real cure.

In 2007 I had stumbled onto raw veganism through Dr. Tam Mateo. I tried 2 months of raw veganism his way, his recipes, his consultation, but I got too thin and finally gave up raw veganism. I added cooked meat and rice again to my diet and to gain weight.

I was then ready for fasting and I tried a 14 day orange juice fast under the tutelage of Barefoot Herbalist MH. It was an eye opener. I got rid of cooked meat and rice addiction. I was ready to try raw fruitarian. And I did try raw fruitarian which only lasted me 2 months. I was getting thinner on raw fruitarian than raw vegan plus I felt cold and I was living in a tropical country, in warm Manila at 25 to 30 degrees celcius. What finally knocked me to stop the fruitarian madness was when I asked for support as to when my cold feelings would stop. A long time fruitarian said it would take 5 years! That did it, I had to find something else.

I stumbled onto the Wai Diet by Wai Genriiu (A form of Raw Paleo Diet). It was an easy step from fruitarian to Wai Diet, just add extra virgin olive oil and raw fish sashimi and raw egg yolks to my tropical fruits. Bam! Instant feeling of good health! I gained sane enough weight from 112 to 120 pounds on Wai Diet. The addition of raw meat to my meat less 4 months was a life giving breath to my health.

After 3 months on Wai Diet I got bored with just sea food, why not try land animals? I stumbled onto Aajonus Vonderplanitz who went on and on about the benefits of raw land animals, raw beef, raw chicken, plus raw dairy.

I needed some hand holding, some support to get me started and I found Geoff Purcell (in the UK) at AllExperts.com very accessible. He and Craig Bates started up Raw Paleo Forum which was very helpful for newbies like me.

I experimented with various raw land animals with duck, chicken, goat, lamb, frogs and liked raw organic grass fed beef the best… the legendary grass fed Batangas beef with yummy yellow fat is true! I experimented with many kinds of raw dairy from goat, cow and carabao and all failed, I just could not digest dairy, I realized I was lactose intolerant. My tummy also disagreed with raw green juicing.

I got curious about the Homo Optimus Diet involving cooked pork, I made my one month experiment and felt my health was inferior on cooked meat compared to raw meat.

I found out that on raw paleo diet of organic fruit and raw fatty organic animal foods, I never got sick for a whole year. I felt invincible. This was a first for me, going on and on everyday expecting not to get sick. The only times I felt sick were the times I tried eating a non-raw paleo diet. Plus for the first time I’ve got bicep muscles on my arms and I’m a sedentary computer geek. Gosh, that talk about eating raw meat will make you put on muscles without gym exercises are true.

In 2009 I shifted to a high fat low carb raw paleo diet and I found it to be even more comfortable. Gone were the shaky hungry feelings characterized by hypoglycemia which I thought was normal throughout my life when every meal time comes.

Raw paleo diet is the easiest diet I have been on although high quality organic fruit and organic meat is expensive. Raw Paleo Diet is even easier than regular SAD or cooked paleo diet. Being free from the shackles of cooking is a dream that must be experienced. It seems I have found “home” as raw paleo diet is so easy even a caveman can do it.

To even further my access to the best foods possible I moved my company office to Cubao, just beside my favorite wet market “Farmers Market” for daily fresh marketing.

My diet these days is a high raw fat, low carb diet composed of:

* raw organic low glycemic local fruits in season – high vitamin C fruits (guava, papaya, indian mangoes), hydrating fruits (watermelon, melon), fatty fruits (durian, coconuts) we follow the seasons

* raw fertilized duck eggs flown in from Palawan

* raw grass fed fatty Batangas beef and sometimes raw goat or raw lamb

* various raw sea food like oysters, clams, small and big fish, sea prawns, etc.

* No supplements. No supplements can match the power of real food.

Raw paleo diet and its variants is curative. My own small children have experienced eating raw paleo diet themselves. When the kids are sick I put them on a raw paleo diet same as mine, they know the cure for their illness is RAW because they experience immediate relief. The kids know who the healthiest person at home is these days.

At the end of this year 2009 I will have been 2 years on raw paleo diet and I now weigh a more respectable 128 pounds with a short height of 5′5″ and 31″ waistline pant size. Always expecting to achieve new health heights over the next years as I fine tweak and continually adjust. All my health issues have been resolved. It has only been these 2 years I have ever felt truly healthy.

Today at 40 years old I look younger, slimmer and have more strength than when I was 30. It is on raw paleo diet that I realized that humans were meant to be healthy and stay healthy, effortlessly.
